Supporting Our Immediate Community
This website started as a way to support our immediate community's farmers, dairies, nurseries, and producers of daily essentials. Our mission is to transform the way we shop by prioritizing these CT businesses in Higganum, Haddam, Killingworth, & the surrounding area. We can support our own economy and eat better & live better in the process, as well as easily identify gaps in available local products and thereby promote growth. We have categorized these businesses by product and how to access/shop. Many businesses are cross-referenced and links to each business' websites are provided. We hope to be a model for other regions, too, fostering a stronger connection between consumers and producers.

Our own contribution to this local food universe is the production of small batch roasted coffees, superior loose-leaf teas, and the goodies to go with in order to elevate your daily caffeinated rituals. If you haven't tried our famous Lemon Sugar Cookies yet (plain or dipped in dark chocolate), you are going to want to remedy that. You can purchase our products here, seasonally in our little shop out in the heart of Higganum, CT, or in quite a few grocery stores, gourmet food shops, breweries, & wineries scattered throughout Connecticut (sign up for our newsletter to find out which local stores are carrying our products). We feel strongly that coffee, tea, & cookies should be an excuse to pause and that splurging a little is all part of self-care. Invest in yourself... you're worth it. As our way of giving back, a portion of our proceeds is donated to our local food pantries.

Have fun shopping and as always: eat well, live well, & shop local.
Farm Store @ 58 McTigh Road, Higganum, CT
Sundays 10-2 April thru Nov

The Underground Grocer has a seasonal farm store nestled in the heart of Higganum! Come on down and see us on Sundays April thru November from 10 AM - 2 PM. We have our coffees, loose leaf teas, lemon sugar cookies (plain & dipped in dark chocolate), and our very own Crumpet Candles if you are in the mood for tea & crumpets without the mess. (These candles are hand-poured 100% soy wax in beautiful le Parfait canning jars and smell like the freshest raspberry jam you've ever had.) Sometimes our sidekick, Wandering Woman brings a few of her goodies to sell in the store, as well, which include soy wax candles reminiscent of her travels around the world, goat milk soaps, beeswax bars & salves, handmade pottery coffee mugs and spoons, sea Chaney jewelry, and unique gifts. Sign up for our newsletter to keep yourself in the loop.

MEET THE TEAM!
Mindi Murphy
Mindi first moved to Higganum as a teen in 1983 and just a few years later went off to explore the world beyond the farm. Despite being voted by her 5 siblings as the most likely to move the furthest away, she returned in 2007 and built a home right next to her parents, where she raised her 3 children; Higganum just always felt the most like home. She has been in and out of the food industry since the early 80's, working in her parents' bakery, various restaurants, and at one time ran a small catering company that focused on using locally sourced products. She enjoys reading anything and everything food-related and has been known to write cookbooks to give as gifts to friends and family. As soon as it is warm enough to spend time outdoors, you will most often find her working in her kitchen garden, which is always abundant with nasturtiums, lettuces, herbs, and heirloom tomatoes. She is on a constant quest to find new varieties of edible flowers to add to salads and to garnish her dishes.
P.S. she loves butter.
